English at Nacton CE Primary School
Our aim is to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for children across their Primary career.
Reading
To encourage early reading, we teach phonics through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised. This is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) developed for schools by schools. It is based on the original Letters and Sounds, but has been extensively revised to provide a complete teaching programme which meets all the expectations of the National Curriculum.
Writing
We use a text based curriculum to encourage reading and writing skills to develop, as well as using programmes Literacy shed and Spelling shed to provide a range of stimuli.
Spelling
Once children progress through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds, we use Spelling shed to teach regular sessions to children in KS2.
Handwriting
In EYFS and KS1, children practise letter formation using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds. Beyond this, children follow the Morrells scheme to practise cursive handwriting. In KS2 children are given high expectations for handwriting and presentation, which is monitored daily and assessed termly.
